Monday 21st March – ski ***** Praz de Lys/Sommand – sunny periods (
48.80 miles, 46.60 kts )
Yet another great night in the little car park close to the Haut Fleury
lift in Les Moliettes just above Praz. With the sun shining but with more
cloud today we were up earl. While Mag sorted out the van and packed a
picnic I got the skis out of the top box and walked up the road to an
automatic Lift pass machine and reactivated our cards from last year :) I
could have had 4 hours for 24.50 or a full day for 29 Euros and went for
the da. After porridge we were up at the lift just past 9 o’clock with
very few people about! There was some technical problems with the lift but
it opened at 9:15 and we soon heading up the long lift to the highest point
of the resorts – Haut Fleury 1980 m - for some top views all around even
if a bit hazy. We were the first people down the lovely Piste du Lac and it
was probably the best run of the day:) We lost each other briefly as I went
to the next lift down while Mag returned to our starting point. I soon
found her and we went to the top again, this time I did the red down – La
Combe which wasn’t icy at all. Because of the high temperature we skied
to the lower runs before they turned to mush! We had a look at the learner
runs where loads of kids were having fun classes and the really young one
were taking a break for a snack in the crèche:) At the bottom of Praz
there is a black ( Planey ) run which is accessed by a dodgy vertical
button. We had a go and I wiped out again but this time only losing a
pole! There was one really nice red off the Bresy button where we sadly saw
someone being strapped in the blood wagon and the day had only just
started:(
Getting peckish we skied right over to Sommand and had half our picnic at
the top where there is also a handy compost toilet – the Platiere button
lift must be the longest one in the resort! When we were here last year
the runs below this point to the right were shut because of lack of snow
but this year the Echerus button was open so we had a couple of goes here
including the un-pisted Echrus black which was awful:( We found another
nice but short red off the Mouille Noire button before heading to the
bottom of Sommand and taking the long Col de Sommand out. You could see
another black – the Le Velard – or as we called it last year the
‘well hard’ as we struggled on it because it was steep and very icy but
this year it was much softer so I decided to give it a go while Mag had fun
skiing nearly all of Sommand runs!!! I had to ski back to where we started
and the pistes were now pretty bad, soft and rucked up:( I made it to the
top of Haut Fleury and to the start of yet another black! It was easy this
year in the softer snow and I made it down with no problems, even managing
to let it go on the steep straight and got my best speed of the day:)
It took me a while to find Mag as I went to the Sommand ticket office for a
piste Map and Mag was skiing the whole resort! We met up in the end but I
was not enjoying it much as my skis were sticking in the soft snow, a good
wax is required. We then went down the pretty Les Preses looking for a spot
for picnic, part two as we were knackered and had had enough really - it
was 3:30! We found a nice spot by a wooden water trough near the bottom of
the Praz l’Eveque and Mag told me of her adventures. Intrigued and
refreshed from our quick break Mag took us over to a run she had found
which we had never skied before – the Blue Les Mottes. The sun returned
after a brief cloudy spel,l where you could not see the lie of the land.
The piste had hardened up again and everyone had disappeared, leaving us to
have so much fun that we did it twice- just getting back to the last lift
to Praz! Which was just as well as it is a long way round by road and we
hadn’t brought any money!!!
The run back to the van was grim being very rucked up and we were pleased
to be back for a cuppa and cake, to get the boost off and relax while the
sun set over the mountains and the piste bashers headed out
So a top day out on the piste lasting 7 hours 35mins and we covered nearly
50 miles, the most of the week:)
Not sure about tomorrow? I think we have had enough of skiing here as we
covered everything today so might have a relaxing start before moving to
our last resort, another favourite – Le Chevrerie where we have the
option to ski or snow shoe for our last days :)
